The Engineering Leadership Book Club
The next installment of The Engineering Leadership Book Club will cover Frederick Brooks’s “The Mythical Man Month”.
This book is a collection of essays about software engineering and project management. Some of the essays are the basis for some well-known concepts, like the mythical man-month (aka Brooks’s Law) and the no silver bullet.
Other ideas, like conceptual integrity and the importance of communication, haven’t gotten the same level of attention but are highly relevant to today’s landscape.
Lastly, some ideas haven’t aged well, primarily because of how the field has evolved. Nevertheless, these are fertile grounds for discussion about why they are irrelevant and how that can inform how we approach new ideas.
This book is a great way to spark conversations and foster critical thinking about software engineering and project management. I guarantee that reading it as a group will allow for much more learning than reading it alone.
